“Imagine 7 different people at different sides & points on a mountain - all aiming for the summit. Progress brings them closer to their goal and closer to each other.”

It’s a simple and inspiring word picture – the great proverbial mountain of challenge & opportunity, coupled with an intrepid group of adventurers.

We remain fascinated by the lengths that humans will go to for a sense of achievement and satisfaction. These stories rekindle our inner fire to push forward, to try harder, to persist longer, to succeed. We are reminded that even when the odds are stacked against us, somehow something remarkable can happen, and the impossible becomes possible. The insurmountable becomes a new viewing platform.

Business leaders need evocative word pictures to take ‘their people’ from the mundane to the momentous. From the desk, to the edge of their seat. From office space, to outer space… And so on. It works.

Particularly with reference to business and organisational topics, we often hear words and phrases such as “shared vision”, “common purpose” and “overall objectives” – all undeniably powerful expressions, conjuring in our minds often-told stories, such as the NASA example:

During a visit to the NASA space center in 1962, President Kennedy noticed a janitor carrying a broom. He interrupted his tour, walked over to the man and said, “Hi, I’m Jack Kennedy. What are you doing?”

“Well, Mr President” the janitor responded, “I’m helping put a man on the moon.”

Truly, a ‘common purpose’ for a not-so-common mission.

The reality is that most of us have amazing imaginations and often untapped depths of creativity. Usually all that’s missing is one thing: Opportunity…

…The opportunity to see a bigger picture, to see ourselves in a wider context, to understand that we can influence the overall outcome, however small or seemingly insignificant our individual part may be (at the time).

Every successful organisation must define its ‘mountain summit’, and use that unchangeable peak to inspire, unify and uplift its people. There will be obstacles, climate changes, set backs… but also amazing vistas, personal bests and team-forging.

In other words, whatever your business or organisation, don’t simply aim high – Aim for the summit.
